ODU'S DANA HELLER TO DISCUSS "THE SELLING OF 9/11" ON "WITH GOOD REASON" SEPT. 10

Dana Heller, Old Dominion University professor of English and director of the Humanities Institute, will be a guest on the radio program "With Good Reason" Sunday, Sept. 10.

A showcase for the research and expertise of faculty at Virginia's higher education institutions, "With Good Reason" can be heard in Hampton Roads on WHRV-FM (89.5) at 6 a.m. It can be heard live on the Web at www.whro.com.

The episode, titled "The Selling of 9/11," will focus on the roles consumer goods, media outlets and commercial advertising have played in shaping the cultural memory of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Heller is the editor of the book, "The Selling of 9/11: How a National Tragedy Became a Commodity" (Palgrave Macmillan, September 2005). From American flag decals and replicas of the World Trade Center to an emotionally fueled advertising campaign for The New York Times, her work examines the contradictory processes by which consumers communicate and construct national identity through cultural and symbolic goods.
