ODU TO HOST LECTURE ON PHILIPPINE LITERATURE

Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, vice president for public affairs at the University of the Philippines, will give a lecture entitled "Philippine Literature in English in the 21st Century" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 in the Newport News Room in Webb Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Hidalgo, the recipient of numerous awards for both fiction and creative nonfiction, is the author of 15 books, including the prize-winning novel "Recuerdo."

Hidalgo's short fiction, essays and scholarly papers have been published in a wide range of international anthologies and journals, including Virtual Lotus: Modern Fiction of Southeast Asia, Babaylan: An Anthology of Filipina and Filipina American Writers and World Literature Today.

Hidalgo has worked as a writer, editor and teacher in Bangkok, Beirut, Seoul, Yangon and New York. She has a master's degree in English literature from the University of Santo Tomas and a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of the Philippines.

The lecture is sponsored by the Old Dominion College of Arts and Letters, the English Department, the Women's Studies Department and Friends of Women's Studies.
