FACULTY HONORED AT ANNUAL AWARDS AND RETIREMENT DINNER

Gary E. Copeland, professor of physics, is the winner of the 2006 A. Rufus Tonelson Faculty Award of the Old Dominion University Alumni Association, which was presented at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner Tuesday, May 2.

The award, which includes a $2,000 prize and a 12-month reserved parking space, is named for one of Old Dominion's first students, Alan Rufus Tonelson '33, who went on to serve as a professor and administrator of the university.

Rocco Schiavilla, professor of physics, received the Eminent Scholar designation at the awards dinner. University Professor titles were awarded to Desmond Cook, physics; Edward Markowski, information systems and decision sciences; Bryan Porter, psychology; Scott Sechrist, nuclear medicine technology; and David Swain, exercise science, sport, physical education and recreation.

Nearly 150 faculty members were honored at the event. The top service award-for 40 years at ODU-went to Harold Wilson, professor of history.

Other award winners include: David Earnest, assistant professor of political science and international studies, Instructional Technology Teaching Award; Maureen Stiner, instructor in finance, Armada Hoffler Weekend College Teaching Award; William McMahon, J. Worth Pickering Administrator of the Year; and Alok Verma, associate professor of engineering technology, Provost's Award for Leadership in International Education.

The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant awards went to Hau Ngo, computer engineering, laboratory; Letitia Montgomery-Rodgers, creative
writing, recitation; and Eyad Youssef, business administration, recitation.

Retiring faculty who were recognized included: William Bartolotta, associate professor of music; Keith Carson, associate professor of biology; William Crouch, associate professor of information technology and decision sciences; John Echternach, eminent scholar and professor of physical therapy; Glenn Gerdin, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Shunichi Toida, professor of computer science; and John Turner, associate professor of occupational and technical studies.
