WEATHER CHANNEL VICE PRESIDENT TO GIVE LECTURE ON HURRICANES TODAY

Raymond J. Ban, executive vice president of Meteorology Science and Strategy for The Weather Channel, will present a seminar about the unusually strong hurricane seasons of 2004 and 2005 on the Old Dominion University campus Thursday, April 20.

The 3 p.m. seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be in Room 200 of the Oceanography and Physics Building. It is a presentation of the Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Ban will discuss new information and ideas about the possible effect of climate change processes on the strength or number of hurricanes.

The speaker, who holds a degree in meteorology from Penn State University, was part of the launch team in 1982 for The Weather Channel. He worked on-air for four years before becoming an administrator for the company.

Ban also is chair of a National Academy of Sciences committee studying ways to more effectively estimate and communicate the inherent uncertainty associated with weather predictions.
