STUDENTS SHINE AT RESEARCH EXPO
Twenty-one of the 160 posters submitted by post-doctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students at Research Expo 2006 were designated by judges for awards. Winners were distributed among the sponsoring institutions: Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University.
The winning post-doctoral research poster was submitted by Assefaw Gebremedhin, Arijit Tarafdar and Alex Pothen of the ODU department of computer science and Fredrik Manne of the University of Bergen, Norway. The title of the poster is "Graph Coloring For Computing Derivatives."
Honorable mentions in the post-doc category went to: Weiping Shen and Julie Kerry of the EVMS department of microbiology and cell biology; Audrea Williams, Harini Jalagani and Elizabeth Mason of the EVMS division of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes; and Henrik Parson, Jillian Bridges, Charlotte Dublin, Jagdeesh Ullah and Aaron Venik of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Institute.
The winning graduate student poster in the computer science, modeling and simulation, engineering and physical sciences cluster was submitted by Micah Scott and Carolyn Rutledge of the ODU School of Nursing. The title of the poster is "Teaching Nurse Practitioner Students to Assess and Manage Adolescents from Counter-Cultures."
Honorable mentions went to: V. Sridhara, Q. Hu, R. P. Joshi and Karl Schoenbach of the ODU department of electrical engineering; Dwight Hunter, B. Lasley, K. Lord, T.M. Williams, R.R. Rakhimov and A. K. Pradham of the NSU Center for Materials Research; and Meenakshi Chitra Lakshmanan, Priyalatha Shanmugam and Rasha Morsi of the NSU engineering department.
The winning graduate student poster in the health and life sciences cluster was submitted by Gaurav Basu, Yu Jing, Ellen Schwegler, Nianyong Chen, Stefan Gravenstein, Yuping Deng and Richard Drake of the EVMS Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. The title of the poster is "Comparative Plasma Protein Expression Profiling for Biomarkers of Influenza Vaccine Response in Elderly and Young Adults.
Honorable mentions went to: Lisa Bolin, Laura Hanson, Julie Kerry and Ann Campbell of the EVMS department of microbiology and molecular cell biology; Tonia Hermon, Alicia Moore, Grace Kissling, Frank Castora and Darlene Dixon of the EVMS biomedical sciences department; and Lisa Turner, Susan Tolle and Gayle McCombs of the ODU School of Dental Hygiene and Wayne Hynes of the ODU department of biological sciences.
The winning graduate student poster in the behavioral sciences, humanities, business and education cluster was submitted by Jennifer Duenas, Sharnail Bazemore, Thomas Cash and Davitta Love of the ODU department of psychology. The title of the poster is "Determinants of Body Image Attitudes and Eating Disturbances in Black College Women."
The honorable mention went to: Theresa Kirchner, Edward Markowski and John Ford of the ODU department of marketing.
The winning undergraduate student poster in the computer sciences, modeling and simulation, engineering and physical sciences cluster was submitted by Kevin Reynolds of the NSU department of physics and Xin Heng and Changhuei Yang of the California Institute of Technology. The title of the poster is " Microfluidic-Based C Elegan Phenotyping Device."
Honorable mentions went to: Sterling Thomas and Sophie Thompson of the ODU department of medical laboratory and radiation sciences, and Danail Bonchev, Lemont Kier and Chao-Kun Cheng of Virginia Commonwealth University; Peter Bradshaw, ODU department of physics; and Cheree Armstrong, NSU department of technology.
The winning undergraduate student poster in the business, education and life, health, behavioral and social sciences cluster was submitted by George Khan, Qunedas Stokley and Camellia Okpodu of the NSU department of biology. The title of the poster is "Modifying CTAB and DNAzol Protocols for the Extraction of DNA from Woody Plant Tissue."
Honorable mentions went to: Hesum Chegini and Yuliya Dobrydneva of the EVMS department of physiological sciences; and Kira Howell and Tabmitha Jervey, NSU department of biology.
