POETRY AT THE BEACH

Old Dominion University's Virginia Beach Higher Education Center will co-hosting a poetry reading series with Norfolk State University for National Poetry Month on Wednesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 26. The readings, which will be held from 7-8 p.m., are free and open to the public.

Poets Rene Olander and Matilda Cox will read on April 19 and Jon Pineda and Luisa Igloria will perform their works on April 26. Books by these poets will be available for purchase at these events.

Luisa Igloria, an associate professor in the creative writing program at ODU, has recently been awarded the 2006 Stephen Dunn Award in the Poetry Words and Images Journal of the University of Southern Maine for her poem "Kierkegaard's Fable." In the poem, Igloria uses a Soren Kierkegaard's fable as the basis for exploration into our perception of happiness.

Igloria's award-winning work opens with the lines:
"What does it take to be happy? Why
are writers always skulking about with long
faces and dark clothing, going on and on about angst
and seemingly resentful of those who claim
they really and truly are happy?"

The Virginia Beach Higher Education Center is located at 1881 University Drive. For more information visit http://www.odu.edu/vbhec.
