ODU BIOLOGY PROFESSOR RECEIVES BEST PAPER AWARD

Rebecca Deramus Bray, adjunct associate professor of biological sciences at Old Dominion University, has been named a 2006 winner of the Richard and Minnie Windler Award for the best paper in systematic botany published last year in Castanea, the journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.

The award was presented in late March at the annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists in Gatlinburg, Tenn. The association is the largest regional organization of biologists in the United States.

Also at the meeting, Brett McMillan, a Ph.D. student in the university's biological sciences ecology program, won the Botanical Society of
America-Southeastern Section award for the best student presentation in plant sciences.

Bray was co-author of the winning paper, "Taxonomic Reassessment of North American Granite Outcrop Isoetes Species." She was an ODU faculty member in biological sciences during the late 1960s and 1970s.

McMillan, the 2002-03 president of the university's Biology Graduate Student Organization, has research interests in botany and ecosystems ecology.
