PERRY LIBRARY TO HOST FIVE-PART SERIES ON JEWISH LITERATURE BEGINNING AUG. 28

Old Dominion University's Perry Library will host a free, five-part series exploring Jewish literature and culture through readings and discussions of contemporary and classic books. The series, "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature -- Identity and Imagination," is open to the public and will begin Sunday, Aug. 28, from 2-4 p.m. in Room 151 of the Perry Library.

Led by David Metzger, professor of English and coordinator of Jewish studies at Old Dominion, the series will examine monsters of the Jewish imagination: demons, golems and dybbuk. It is funded by Nextbook, the American Library Association (ALA) and Old Dominion's Institute of Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this unique series," said Virginia S. O'Herron, university librarian. "It is a wonderful chance to sponsor community discussions on Jewish literature and we are especially pleased to have a highly qualified scholar, Dr. Metzger, lead the discussions."

The first program will review Isaac Bashevis Singer's "Satan in Goray." It will be followed by "The Dybbuk" by Solomon Ansky Sept. 11; "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka Oct. 16; "The Puttermesser Papers" by Cynthia Ozick Nov. 20; and "Angels in America" by Tony Kushner Dec.11.

Seating is limited and registration is required by contacting Frances McCraw at 683-4141 or fmccraw@odu.edu. Participants are encouraged to attend the entire series and books are available for borrowing at the library's Circulation Services desk.
