ODU NAMES NEW ASSISTANT DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES

Brenda Neumon Lewis, associate vice president for academic affairs at Norfolk State University, has been named assistant dean of graduate studies at Old Dominion University. This administrative position is effective Nov. 10.

As assistant dean, Lewis will be primarily responsible for supporting and expanding the quality of services and monitoring of graduate student success. She will oversee the awarding of student stipends and tuition waivers, compliance with graduate admissions criteria and standards, student appeals and grievances, training workshops, certification of graduate faculty, and the development and implementation of effective and consistent graduate academic requirements and benchmarking.

Lewis returns to Old Dominion after spending five years at Norfolk State in the academic affairs office. She began at NSU as a special assistant to the vice president for academic affairs in 1999 and was appointed the associate vice president for academic affairs in 2000.

Prior to that, Lewis served as director of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Old Dominion, where she was responsible for the management of the budget, establishing program policy and procedures and developing curriculum, among other duties.

She received a bachelor's degree from Doane College, a master's degree in English education from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in education administration from Ohio State University.
