COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES WINS AWARDS

Several faculty and students of Old Dominion University's College of Health Sciences won awards at the recent International Conference on Urban Health held in Boston.

Yan Zhang, a student in the college, took third place for her talk, "Using Social Cognitive Theory to Model Behaviors among Chinese American Children," which was assisted by professors Stacey Plichta, Claire Houseman and Laurel Garzon.

Student Hongyun Fu joined Houseman and Plichta earned honorable mention honors for her talk on "Community Level Correlates of Commercial Sex in China."

Several other posters created by students and professors earned honorable mention at the conference, including:

"A Community-Based Program: Teaching Food Safety to Seniors" by Paul Magnant, Holly Beard, Jewel Goodman, and Plichta;

"An Examination of the Health Care Delivery System Use by African-American and White Patients: Implications for the Future" by Janice Ranne;

"Results of a Pilot Survey: Risk Communication for Vaccine Safety, Training Providers and Immunization Advocates" by Ranne, Clint Crews, and Rachel Haltner; and

"Maintaining and Improving Positive Health Behaviors in High Risk Adolescent Girls" by Zhang, Susan Tweed and Plichta.
