SCHOOL OF NURSING RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP SYMPOSIUM IS TODAY IN CONVOCATION CENTER

The College of Health Sciences' School of Nursing will hold a Research and Scholarship Symposium from 2-4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will highlight faculty and student research in the school in presentations, demonstrations and posters. Additionally, the school will demonstrate SimMan, a high-tech patient-simulation dummy that the school received from a grant from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

The scheduled presentations are as follows:

2 p.m.
Introduction: Overview of the School of Nursing and Center for Research and Scholarship -- Richardean Benjamin, chair of School of Nursing

Greeting: Dr. Andrew Balas, dean of the College of Health Sciences

Presentation: "Providing Graduate Nurses to Underserved Areas through Distance Learning" -- Laurel Garzon, graduate program director

Demonstration: "SimMan from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Grant"

3 p.m.

Presentation: "Serving the Needs of Virginia through Undergraduate Nursing Programs" -- Kay Palmer, undergraduate program director

Presentation: "Developing Culturally Appropriate Nursing Curricula Using Focus Groups" -- Richardean Benjamin, chair of School of Nursing

Presentation: "Reaching out to the Community through Community Health Activities" -- Phyllis Eaton

Demonstration: "Anesthesia Simulation" -- Michael Jackson, interim director, Nurse Anesthesia Program.
