ODU ORGAN CONCERT IS NOV. 8

James W. Kosnik, professor of organ and music history at Old Dominion University, will perform the Virginia premiere of ODU colleague Adolphus Hailstork's Concerto for Organ and Percussion, "Armageddon: The Collapse of the World Trade Center," in concert Monday, Nov. 8, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1004 Graydon Ave., Norfolk.

The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will also feature percussionists Rob Cross, executive director of the Virginia Arts Festival, and David Walker, adjunct professor of percussion at ODU. Hailed as one of the most prolific African American composers of his generation, Hailstork joined Old Dominion in 2000, where he is an eminent scholar of music.

Hailstork's powerful meditation on the terrifying events of Sept. 11 transverses the gamut of powerful emotions of anger, horror and despair. And, as he states in his program notes, the composition concludes with "bell tones in the percussion, and gradually disappearing chords in the organ, bringing the work to a questioning silence."

"This particular piece mostly captures the outrage, the desire to strike back in response to such villainy," Hailstork says. "Ultimately, the work expresses a yearning for another way for human beings to live, and ends with a question mark about whether we shall find a path to peace before it is too late for us all."

The free concert will also include performances of Nikolaus Bruhns' Praeludium in E Minor, Henk Badings' Passacagalia for Timpani and Organ and Bach's Passacagalia, BWV 582.
