COMMUNITY CARE DAY ORGANIZERS SURPASS VOLUNTEER GOAL

Due to the overwhelming support of Old Dominion University students, faculty, staff, alumni and community, more than 370 volunteers have registered for Community Care Day's neighborhood cleanup Saturday, Oct. 16.

The event's organizers are expanding volunteer opportunities to include special community service projects at the Virginia Zoo, Stockley Garden's Arts Festival, Painting Paws and ODU, Larchmont Library and The American Cancer Society that day. Registered volunteers interested in participating in these events in lieu of the neighborhood cleanup should e-mail scrawf@odu.edu.

The Virginia Zoo needs 20 volunteers to help with an event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16. ODU will provide a shuttle from ODU to the Zoo and back.

Stockley Garden's Art Festival needs six volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 to set-up artists' tables and provide breaks for the artists. ODU will provide a shuttle from ODU to the Festival and back.

Painting Paws at ODU needs 10 volunteers from 9:30 to 11 a.m. to repaint and add new paws on the sidewalks around campus.

Larchmont Library needs two volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for light clerical work and book sorting. The library also needs 15 volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to clean-up trash and leaves around the library.

The American Cancer Society needs 15 volunteers to make phone call to thank people who participated in Relay for Life and 15 volunteers to stuff packets.

Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt and $5.00 coupon good towards a meal in Webb Center Oct. 16 thanks to support from the ODU Offices of Community Relations, Administration and Finance, Institutional Advancement and University Events.

The day will also include free workshops, seminars, activities, and information booths on home, lawn & garden, health care, safety, and family fun, volunteerism, & prospective college students for the local community. For more information visit www.odu.edu/ccd.
