GALLERY EXHIBIT OPENS SUNDAY

A selection of paintings by famed modern art historian Walter Pach and his wife, Magda, will be at the Old Dominion University Gallery, 350 W. 21st St., Norfolk.

The selection of early 20th-Century works belongs to their only son, Raymond Pach, who resides in Newport News. Walter Pach, critic, historian, collector, teacher and connoisseur, is primarily known as a spokesman and catalyst for the modernist movement.

Raymond Pach will give a gallery talk at 2 p.m. at the University Gallery before the opening reception at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.

He is well known for playing a key role in producing the ground-breaking 1913 Armory show with Arthur B. Davies and Walt Kuhn. The Armory Show featured, for the first time in the U.S., works of great European modern artists such as Matisse, Picasso and the Duchamp brothers. Pach is less known as an artist himself, although he exhibited widely during his lifetime.
