FORMER ODU PLAYER ADVANCES AT U.S. OPEN

Former Lady Monarch tennis player Tzipi Obziler advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia.

Obziler will face the tournament's top seed, Justine Hennin-Hardenne, in the second round. Belgium native Hennin-Hardenne captured the U.S. Open Title in 2003 and most recently captured the Australian Open in 2004.

While at Old Dominion, Obziler won the ITA National Clay Court in 1995 and became the #1 player in the country before pursuing a professional tennis career. She advanced to the second round of the Australian open earlier this year.

Current ODU tennis director Darryl Cummings is serving as Obziler's coach at the U.S. Open. More information about the 2004 US Open is available on the Web at http://www.usopen.org.
