ODU'S 2004-05 LECTURE SERIES ANNOUNCED

Notable figures in poetry, the humanities, journalism and natural sciences will be among the speakers for the 2004-05 President's Lecture Series at Old Dominion University. All lectures are at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

National Public Radio personality Garrison Keillor of "A Prairie Home Companion" fame will headline with a lecture on April 28 in the North Cafeteria of Webb University Center.

Coleman Barks, poet and professor emeritus of English at the University of Georgia, will be the first speaker for the 2004-05 series on Thursday, Sept 16. His talk, "Rumi's Work with Community," will be in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building Auditorium. Barks has spent 28 years collaborating with various Persian scholars to translate the poetry of the 13th-century mystic Jelaluddin Rumi.

Richard Rodriguez, author and journalist, will speak Oct. 7. His talk, "Brown: The Last Discovery of America," will address America's black-and-white notion of race and propose the color brown for understanding the future (and past) of America. It will be in the Webb University Center cafeteria.

Feb. 9 - Roger Wilkins, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and professor of history and American culture at George Mason University, will deliver his lecture in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The following talks will be held in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building:

Nov. 4 - Robert Kirshner, educator, researcher and author, "The Extravagant Universe: Exploding Stars, Dark Energy and the Accelerating Cosmos"

Jan. 27 - Susan Landry, professor and developmental psychologist at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston

March 31 - Louise Leakey, paleoanthropologist and National Geographic explorer-in-residence.
