EXERCISE SCIENCE FACULTY LEADS GROUP ABROAD

Hiroyuki Hamada, martial artist in-residence, and Kim Baylor, adjunct faculty in the exercise science, sport, physical education and recreation department at Old Dominion University, led the first youth international martial arts team of 60 top third- through 12th-grader from the USA, Canada and Germany to Kyoto, Japan, July 25-Aug. 10.

The USA team was awarded the most outstanding team honor in their martial art performances. Jessica Tow, 9, a third-grade student, received one of the top individual awards for excellence from Chairman Higashi Fushimi. She is the daughter of Patrick K. Tow, associate professor and department chair of ESPER, who suddenly passed away in 2002.

Hamada gave an address, "International Comparative Perspectives in Education," at the International Forum in Education held in Hiroshima University in Higashihiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6.
