U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION CITES ODU'S E-LEARNING COMMITMENT IN RECENT SPEECH

In his speech at the joint luncheon for the Teachers' Workshop and the No Child Left Behind Leadership Summit on Technology this month, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige listed Old Dominion University among the higher institutions that have made a major commitment to e-learning.

"New technology provides another opportunity for improvement through distance learning. This tool gives teachers an opportunity for professional dialogue and training. I know that many universities have made a huge commitment to e-learning: University of Texas, University of Southern California, Old Dominion University, and hundreds of others," Paige said.

His remarks focused on the importance of teachers throughout history as "counselors, community leaders, judges, negotiators and visionaries;" technology as a tool to share information and expand intellectual horizons; and the U.S. Department of Education's recent initiatives to improve teaching and learning quality.

As one of the nation's largest providers of distance learning degree programs, ODU delivers courses to more than 7,000 students per year via TELETECHNET.
