O'HERRON NAMED UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

Virginia S. O'Herron has been named university librarian at Old Dominion University, Provost Thomas L. Isenhour announced Friday, May 21.

O'Herron, who has served as interim university librarian since July 2002, was chosen following a national search chaired by Chandra de Silva, dean of ODU's College of Arts and Letters.

"Ms. O'Herron is dedicated to the success of ODU as well as the Perry Library," Isenhour said. "She works well with the administration and other deans. Her fellow deans enthusiastically acknowledge her as a great partner, and the library staff find her to be a competent and caring leader."

As university librarian, O'Herron oversees Perry Library, the Diehn Composers Room and the Hofheimer Art Library, and supervises a staff of 19 librarians and 47 classified employees. She served as ODU's assistant university librarian for information services from 1993 to 2000.

During her 11 years at Old Dominion, O'Herron has been involved in many committees, including the Provost's Council, the NCATE Reaccredidation Committee and several search committees. Some of her library committees include the Digital Initiatives Team and the Library Strategic Planning committee.

She is a member of the American Association of Higher Education and the American Library Association. In Virginia, O'Herron is a member of the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education, where she served as chair of the Library Directors Committee for two years. She is also on the Virtual Library of Virginia Steering Committee.

O'Herron received her bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and two master's degrees, one in library science from Simmons College and the other in business administration from the University of Tampa.
