VERLANDER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior righthander Justin Verlander has been named CAA Pitcher of the Week and is one of four Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball newspaper after his complete game, three-hit shutout against Virginia Commonwealth Friday night. This is his second Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Verlander helped lead ODU to a 3-0 victory over VCU. The 6-5 pitcher fanned a season-high 16 and allowed just three singles and faced only 31 batters in the nine innings. It was the fourth time this year he has struck out 10 or more hitters.
Verlander, the CAA's and ODU's all-time strikeout leader (366), currently has a 4-3 record, with a 3.00 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. He leads the CAA in strikeouts and is eighth in ERA. Opponents are batting .193 against him.
The Monarchs return to action Tuedsay night when they travel to Durham to take on Duke, then return home Wednesday night to play Richmond before traveling to Delaware for a three-game CAA series this weekend.
