SANKOFA CELEBRATION MAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE

Minds About Progress, a student group at Old Dominion University, will hold its fourth annual Sankofa Celebration from 1- 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, outside the Hugo A. Owens African American Cultural Center. Sankofa is a word in Adrinka, the language of the Akan people of Ghana, that means returning to your roots, recapturing what you lost and moving forward. The program, which features music, food, dance, storytelling, lectures and ethnic food, is free and open to the public. It will be held in the North Cafeteria of Webb University Center in case of rain.

Robert Watson, assistant professor of political science and history at Hampton University, will give a slide show on "West Africa and the Slave Trade Between the Africas and Americas." Malika Negwa of Mediterranean Images and the ODU Filipino American Student Association cultural dance group will perform. The
UHURU Capoeria Association will give a martial arts demonstration and a Ghanaian storyteller will be on hand. DJ Yohon will provide music and MoDean's Carribean Restaurant will provide food.
