ODU TUITION RATES SET BY B.O.V.
Old Dominion University will raise its annual tuition and fees for in-state undergraduate students by 6.9 percent, effective with the summer 2004 term. The university's Board of Visitors approved the increase at its April 8 meeting.
Full-time, in-state undergraduate students will pay $5,268 for 30 credit hours, a $340 increase over this year's rate. In-state graduate students will have a 4.7 percent increase in tuition and fees, paying $6,072 for 24 credits. Room and board rates for freshmen living in Rogers and Gresham residence halls will increase 2.9 percent, or $166. The cost to attend Old Dominion in 2004-05 for an in-state undergraduate living in Rogers or Gresham, based on 30 credit hours and a full meal plan, will be $11,070.
Robert L. Fenning, vice president for administration and finance, noted that the new tuition and fee structure was established "in a period of budgetary uncertainty," given the lack of an approved state budget in advance of the board meeting, but he pointed out that the new rates were based on several known factors, including significant unavoidable cost increases, time-sensitive resource needs, and tuition-and-fee language in all three state budget bills that tuition increases should not go higher than 10 percent. For in-state undergraduates, the tuition-only increase amounts to 8.7 percent, and for in-state graduate students, 4.9 percent. The tuition-only increases for out-of-state undergraduate and graduate students will be 4.4 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively.
Out-of-state undergraduate students will see a 4.3 percent increase in yearly tuition and fees, from $14,078 to $14,688; out-of-state graduate students will pay $15,322 for 24 credits, or 4.7 percent more than in 2003-04.
Fenning said the university adhered to the following guiding principles in setting tuition and fees for 2004-05:
�Ensuring the quality of instructional programs;
�Ensuring course offerings are staffed and available to students;
�Recognizing instructional and support needs;
�Continuing the Strategic Plan; and
�Recognizing students' financial needs.
