HOLOCAUST HISTORIAN LANI SILVER VISITS ODU THURSDAY

Old Dominion University's Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding is honored to bring noted oral historian and political activist Lani Silver to campus Thursday, April 29.

12:30-1:20: "The James Byrd Jr. Racism Oral History Project" in BAL 921.

Lani Silver is a Holocaust oral historian and a political activist. Silver founded the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in l98l and was executive director from l98l to l997. In her l6 years with the project, Silver gathered l,700 interviews with Holocaust survivors and witnesses. Silver is now the project director of the James Byrd Jr. Racism Oral History Project, which is a project sponsored by the James Byrd Jr. Foundation for Racial Healing. The project is asking thousands of people to describe the impact on racism on their lives. With historian Eric Saul, Silver spent the past seven years discovering and promoting the story of Chiune Sugihara, known as "The Japanese Schindler." Silver has co-edited Mrs. Yukiko, Sugihara's English language memoirs, and has published two books in Japan about the Sugihara story.
