'SALT OF THE EARTH' SCREENED FRIDAY

The Work and Professional Studies Program, in conjunction with the seventh annual Old Dominion University Film and Video Festival, will hold a screening of the film "Salt of the Earth" at 4:20 p.m. Friday, March 19, at several locations via virtual classroom technology.

Locations are: Perry Library Room 129; room 317 at the Northern Virginia Center, Sterling, Va.; room 238 at the Peninsula Center, Hampton; room 158 of the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center.

"Salt of the Earth" was to be the story of miners fighting against a giant company; of Chicanos and Anglos; and of miners and their families. The miners were to play themselves, and it was to be filmed on site. The crew was made up of blacklisted technicians, and only two professional actors would appear in the film: blacklisted Will Geer (the Sheriff, and who later went on to play the Grandpa on The Waltons on television), and Mexican actress Rosuara Revueltas (Esperanza).

The festival is free and open to students, faculty, staff and friends of Old Dominion University. Lou Lombardo of the Department of Sociology will conduct the dialogue sessions and engage participants.
