PRESIDENT OF HONEYWELL EUROPE TO ADDRESS HAMPTON ROADS ECONOMICS CLUB

Maja Wessels, president of Honeywell Europe and chair of the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union, a nonprofit organization that represents the business interests of more than 140 European companies of American parentage, will speak at the Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Tuesday, March 23.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion University's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon, scheduled for noon at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel in downtown Norfolk, costs $30 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, reservations are required.

Formerly president of United Technologies Corp.'s international operations in Europe and vice president of government affairs for DaimlerChrysler in Brussels, Wessels was born in Germany and raised in the United States. She received her graduate degree from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.

As chair of the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union, Wessels is the chief nongovernmental lobbyist for U.S. business concerns in Europe that support more than 3 million jobs with a total investment of some $570 billion. In remarks to the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, Wessels said, "Given that the U.S. and the EU are the twin engines of the global economy, anything which strengthens the EU economy is good for the U.S. economy."

The American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium, with 1,000 corporate European and American members, monitors legal, fiscal and labor-related conditions, proposes improvements aimed at further economic growth, and encourages Belgian-American trade and investment.
