ODU'S VMASC RECEIVES $22 MILLION GRANT

Old Dominion University's Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) has been awarded a contract to support various U.S. Joint Forces Command's (USJFCOM) command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) programs.

The base period of the contract is valued at $4.1 million and the total estimated value of the contract, if all options are exercised, is estimated to be more than $22 million over a five-year period beginning April 1, 2004.

The contract is the second VMASC agreement with USJFCOM in the last two months. In February, the center was awarded a $10 million contract to support Joint Forces' modeling and simulation efforts.

The contract will support many of the command's key initiatives, including the Joint Training Directorate's Joint National Training Capability, the Joint Experimentation Directorate's knowledge management program, the Command, Control, Communications and the Computer (C4) Systems Directorate's joint management command and control program.

An enterprise center of ODU's College of Engineering and Technology, VMASC will also support work on the Joint C4ISR Battle Center's Collaboration, Communications, Compression, Geospatial Information Fusion Systems program and the Joint Intelligence Directorate Multi-Sensor, Aerospace Joint ISR Capability Coalition (MAJIIC) program.

The contract provides engineering and technical support in the form of studies, technical analysis, and programmatic and technical assessments as well as documentation of various aspects of the C4ISR program to include both joint and NATO support.

Headquartered in Norfolk, Va., U.S. Joint Forces Command is one of nine unified commands in the Department of Defense. Among his duties, the commander of USJFCOM oversees the command's roles in transformation, experimentation, joint training, interoperability and force provision as outlined in the Department of Defense's Unified Command Plan.

Work will be performed in Norfolk and at USJFCOM's Suffolk facilities. Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk, Detachment Philadelphia, produced the contract.
