ODU FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL THROUGH MARCH 26
"Stranger Than Fiction: Framing Reality on Film and Television," ODU's 2004 Film and Video Festival, opens Sunday, March 21, with a weeklong series of films and lectures focusing on the relationship between fiction and nonfiction films.
All events are free and open to the public and will take place on the campus of Old Dominion University, unless noted.

9 a.m. "In Our Children's Food", Introduction and comments by Emmy award-winning Martha Daas, Assistant Professor Foreign Language, Old Dominion University (Location: Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center, Old Dominion University)
- "In Our Children's Food," an episode of Frontline, traces the 30-year history of US pesticide use, regulation and scientific study and explores what is and is not known about the risks of agricultural chemicals in our food. The program, reported by Bill Moyers, examines how the government has failed to certify pesticide safety and why the only source of data on the safety of pesticides is the industry that profits from them.

Noon: New Dominion Pictures panel (Location: Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center, Old Dominion University)
- Join representatives of New Dominion Pictures for a panel discussion about turning real life into docudrama programming for cable networks like the Discovery Channel. From true crime� to medical mysteries� to covert military operations and even the supernatural, our discussion will focus on the realities of development and production, as well as where the entertainment industry draws the line between fact� and drama. Panel participants will include Allison Erkelens (Head Writer and Vice President of Development), Mike Sinclair (Series Producer), Joe Wiecha (Director) and Manu Wiecha (Post Production Supervisor.)
3 p.m. "Cinepasts" (2000). Introduction and comments by filmmaker, Gabriel Paletz, The College of William & Mary (Location: Mills Godwin Jr. Building, Room 102, Old Dominion University)
- This short film looks at the careers of four unsung heroes of the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television. The film interweaves their careers at the School with the history of film technology that has formed their working lives.
Immediately following: "Try Not to Scream" Introduction and comments offered by filmmaker James C. Oleson, Assistant Professor Sociology, Old Dominion University (Location: Mills Godwin Jr. Building, Room 102, Old Dominion University)
Film Description: Try Not to Scream is the story of a drug mule whose cargo has ruptured in flight. It's unclear whether there's only a pinhole leak in one cocaine-filled condom, or whether several of the condoms have ruptured. All the mule knows as he exits the plane is that he's sick. His brother and his friend try to help him through the situation, but -- badgered by the drug dealer's thugs and fearing that they're being followed by the police -- their decisions are increasingly reckless.
