FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY AUTHOR DINNER SET FOR APRIL 12
Gary Edgerton, chair of Old Dominion University's communication and theatre arts department, will be the guest speaker for the 10th annual Friends of the ODU Library Author Dinner Monday, April 12.
The organization will present its Outstanding Achievement Award to Cynthia Jones, eminent scholar of oceanography and biological sciences and director of the university's Center for Quantitative Fisheries Ecology.
The dinner will be held in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 (vegetarian entr�e available upon request). Tickets are $20; checks, made payable to Friends of the Library, should be mailed to: Friends of the Library Author Dinner, 229 Perry Library, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA 23529-0256. Reservations must be received by Friday, April 9.
Edgerton has published five books and more than 50 essays on a variety of film, television and culture topics. His most recent book is "Ken Burns's America" (2001). He co-edits the Journal of Popular Film and Television and recently received the 2004 American Culture Association Governing Board Award for Outstanding Contributions to American Cultural Studies. He is the founder and artistic director of the ODU Film and Video Festival.
Jones was named a Virginia Outstanding Scientist of 2003. Previously, she was appointed by the governor as an associate commissioner of Virginia's marine regulatory body, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. She is the first fisheries scientist to hold this position in the commission's 125-year history. Jones is internationally known for her pioneering work in fisheries ecology, particularly her studies of fish ear bones, or otoliths. Based on this research, scientists can determine the date of birth in young fish as well as track their growth and survival during their most vulnerable life stages.
She has chaired and served as a member of numerous committees for the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council and has been a U.S. representative to the Scientific Council of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
