FILIPINO LECTURE IS TUESDAY AT ODU
Enrique de la Cruz, professor of Asian American studies at California State University-Northridge, will discuss "War and the Construction of the 'Filipino'" from 12:15-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in room 136 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The lecture is a joint presentation of Old Dominion's Filipino American Center, the Institute of Asian Studies and the Department of History.
The lecture will discuss the racialization of Filipinos utilizing cartoon images during the Philippine-American War of 1898-1904.
A reception will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Filipino American Center on 49th Street.
De la Cruz received his Ph.D. in philosophy from UCLA and has written numerous articles on Asian Americans, Filipino Americans and the Philippines. His most recent publication is "Confrontations, Crossings, and Convergence: Photographs of the Philippines and the United States, 1898-1998" (UCLA Press). He also edited a special double issue of Amerasia Journal, titled "Essays into American Empire in the Philippines."
