'ROCK PAPER SCISSORS' OPENS SATURDAY

The Old Dominion University Gallery will present "Rock Paper Scissors," an exhibition of sculptural installations by Amos Scully, Priscilla Hollingsworth and Allison Smith, Feb. 21-March 21.

The gallery will host a reception from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The University Gallery, located at 350 W. 21st St., Norfolk, is open noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Scully, Hollingsworth and Smith use widely divergent media in their installations. Hollingsworth is a professor at Augusta State University. Her ceramic installation, "Nub," responds to the basic human attraction to simple, stubby forms by referencing buds and growth tips in plants.

Through repetition of form she creates a protective enveloping environment for the viewer. Smith, an independent artist working in New York City, works with handmade paper, wire and recycled newspaper to create her wall and freestanding pieces. Smith uses these materials to fabricate images of common objects, such as articles of clothing and typographical icons, to refer to a range of human concerns - from childhood taunts to the rigors of the 40-hour work week.

Scully, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, will present four new floor pieces in fabric, wood, steel and plastic. His kinetic and static functionless and funny sculptures, made from fabricated and found objects, appear to have a utilitarian purpose but are in fact quite purposeless.

He will give a slide lecture on his work from 12:30-1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in room 107 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center on the ODU campus.
