LIBRARY HOSTS BROWN V. BOARD EXHIBIT

In recognition of Black History Month, the Old Dominion University Libraries will sponsor an exhibit entitled "Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education: Thurgood Marshall, the Man and His Legacy."

The exhibit will be available for viewing in the main lobby of the Perry Library through Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Marshall, who later became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, led NAACP lawyers in their constitutional challenge of racial segregation in public schools. After numerous legal challenges by the NAACP and others to end the discriminatory doctrine of "separate but equal" schools, the Supreme Court issued a decision in 1954 that provided the legal foundation for public school desegregation and ultimately led to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

Features include an interactive CD-ROM, photographs, books, and extensive Special Collections materials related to the desegregation of Norfolk Public Schools. In addition, an exhibit Web page with oral history links is located at http://www.lib.odu.edu/exhibits/brownvboard.htm.
