NORFOLK SCHOOL HOSTS ODU ART EXHIBIT

Norfolk Collegiate Lower School will open "F3: Form Function Fibers," a two-person show by Old Dominion University students Helena Benda and Sandy Key on Thursday, Nov. 13, with a reception on from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Norfolk Collegiate Lower School, located at 5429 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, will host the exhibition through Friday, Dec. 19.

The students are completing their bachelor of fine arts degrees with fibers concentration and art education licensure at ODU and will graduate in May 2004.

"F3: Form Function Fibers" is an exhibition of weavings and quilts by Key and screen printed fabrics by Benda. Key's weavings and quilts strike a balance between the tranquil familiarity of pattern with exciting digression from the traditional quilt or woven blanket in its new experimental form. Benda's 1950s-inspired screen printed designs stimulate with color, line and form and create a surface vibration by juxtaposing blocks of pattern. Both artists find resolution in their fiber works by the emergence of a larger pattern through repetition and rhythm using traditional and contemporary surface design techniques.
