CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION DISCUSSION IS NOV. 17

"Preventing Child Abuse: Do Issues Differ by Culture?", a panel discussion moderated by Old Dominion University sociology faculty member Karen Polonko, will be from 7-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17, in room 104 of the Batten Arts and Letters Building, 43rd Street and Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk.

Panelists include:

- Christine M. Chao, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, assistant clinical professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine -- noted author of numerous publications on Asian children and families;

- Belinda Bruster, child welfare faculty member, School of Social Work, Norfolk State University -- private practice with Adolescent and Family Institute;

- Pamela Y. Adams, family advocacy representative, Fleet and Family Support Center -- case manager for child and spouse abuse cases; also provides educational programs on anger and stress management, conflict management, and marriage enrichment;

As we struggle to protect our nation's children from abuse it is important to know if all families face the same issues or if there are differences by culture that will help us be more effective in keeping our children safe, Polonko said.

The discussion is presented by the group In Support of Children; and The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice ODU chapter.
