CHANGING POLITICAL CONSERVATISM OF JAPAN IS TOPIC FOR ECONOMICS CLUB MEETING

Itaru Shimazu, dean of the Graduate School for Social Science and Humanities and professor of law and economics at Chiba University in Japan, will speak at the Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon Friday, Nov. 7.

The speaker series is co-sponsored by Old Dominion University's College of Business and Public Administration. The luncheon, scheduled for noon at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, costs $30 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, reservations are required.

Shimazu facilitated Chiba University's innovative doctoral program in urban studies, which allows students to study and research the worldwide phenomenon of rapid urbanization from a multifaceted interdisciplinary perspective. He has published extensively both in English and Japanese in the field of legal and ethical issues, and has presented papers worldwide dealing with legal, philosophic and epistemological issues.

At the Economics Club meeting, Shimazu will address the changing political conservatism of Japan intertwined with evolving U.S.-Japan relations. He is a member of the Japan Association for Legal Philosophy and Public Policy Studies. He was a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institute from 1987-88. Shimazu received his bachelor's and doctor of law degree's from the University of Tokyo.
