ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE EMPLOYEES RECEIVE AWARDS

Elizabeth Newberry, customer services supervisor in the Department of Human Resources, Tuesday received the Gazelle Award from Robert Fenning, vice president for administration and finance, at the annual area-wide meeting for their division.

Several other employees also were recognized for achievement in the department's new Telephone Protocol Branding Contest.

The Gazelle Award was instituted by administration and finance officers in 1996 to recognize an employee in the division, nominated by his or her peers, who demonstrates, among other things, consistent exceptional performance of duties. Newberry was cited for her outstanding customer service and commitment to Old Dominion University.

As noted in the nomination form, Newberry "demonstrates her commitment to ODU by consistently providing exceptional customer service, not only to her co-workers, but members of the university community, applicants and the general public. She is a conscientious and dedicated employee who projects a friendly, positive image at all times."

Newberry, who came to Old Dominion in 1975, left in 1990 and returned in 1995. She is a previous winner of the Department of Human Resources' Employee of the Year award.

Also at the area-wide meeting, Fenning announced the winners of the Telephone Protocol Branding Contest.

The Department of Human Resources won for its logo of a telephone noting the headings of each protocol. Tom Loizides of the Department of Computing and Communication Services won for his slogan, "Make the Connection."

Members of the Telephone Protocol Committee were: September Sanderlin (chair), Leigh Comsudis, Derek Harrell, Patricia Hinton, Katie Loomis, Donna Meeks, Connie Merriman, Elizabeth Newberry, Dana Johnson Packer, Michelle Purkett, Lynda Shirk, Tanya White and Laverne Whitehurst.

Earlier this year, the Administration and Finance division appointed a committee to establish proper telephone etiquette and protocol for everyone in the division. The committee was successful in developing the proper protocol, which was approved by the vice president and the Administration and Finance officers. The need for a slogan/logo for the protocol prompted a "branding" contest.
