WIND TUNNEL TESTING OF WRIGHT FLYER FEATURED ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL
Old Dominion University's testing of the replica of the Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer will be featured in "Wright Brothers: First in Flight," Saturday, Sept. 27 on the Discovery Channel.
The documentary, which chronicles the Wright Experience's arduous task of recreating the historical plane, is scheduled to air at 6 p.m. Locally, the Discovery Channel runs on channel 31 on Cox Cable.
Last spring, Old Dominion researchers at the College of Engineering and Technology's Langley Full Scale Wind Tunnel conducted aerodynamic testing on an authentic airworthy reproduction of the Wright brothers' successful powered flying machine. The reproduction, built by the Wright Experience, will be flown in Kitty Hawk, N.C., in December to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brothers' famous first flight. During the testing, engineers took the necessary measurements to determine how the 1903 Wright Flyer can be flown and controlled.
