HART LEADS CLASS ON COMMUNICATION AND 9/11

William B. Hart, assistant professor of communication and theatre arts at Old Dominion University, this fall will teach a course titled "Communication and 9/11," which covers the impact on popular culture in the nearly two years since the terror attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

In the wake of the attacks, many communication researchers carried out a wide variety of related research studies focusing mainly on the role communication played in the reactions to the attacks themselves. Hart's class will review and evaluate many of these studies, including:

-How TV covered the crisis;
-The portrayal of the enemy in editorial cartoons;
-9/11 memorials;
-Reactions of children;
-Wartime rhetoric, propaganda and patriotism;
-The role of the Internet; and
-The role popular music played in coping with the events.

Hart's research and teaching interests include intercultural communication, international media systems, rhetorical criticism and 9/11-related communication research. Hart published a chapter on 9/11 editorial cartoons and has submitted for review a paper on 9/11 songs.
