LETTERPRESS PRINTS ON DISPLAY AT ODU

The fine art of letterpress printmaking is on display at Old Dominion University.

Vintage posters produced by Old Dominion University printmaking students, using a press purchased in 1966 by art Prof. Ken Daley, will be on display on the first floor of the Visual Arts Building through Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Letterpress printing has, for the most part, passed into the realm of the fine arts. It is now primarily a process used by those involved in book arts and fine art publishing. However, the commercial and folk spirit of letterpress printing has been kept alive by such enterprises as Yee-Haw Industrial Letterpress and Design Co. in Knoxville and Hatch Show Print of Nashville, Tenn.

A collection of traditional letterpress prints from the historic Hatch Studio of Nashville, Tenn., will be from Aug. 16-Sept. 21 at the University Gallery. An opening reception will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the gallery, 350 W. 21st St., Norfolk.

Hatch's Jim Sherraden will give a slide presentation, titled "The Hatch Chat," at 12:30 Thursday, Sept. 18, in room 107 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. A letterpress workshop will be conducted by Sherraden in room 130 of the Visual Arts Building on Friday, Sept. 19. More information is available on the Web at http://www.halloffame.org/hatch/.

Examples of posters from Yee-Haw are on display at the University Gallery through Sunday, Aug. 10, as part of the current "Press the Flesh" exhibition.

More information on the ODU gallery is available by calling 683-2355 or via the Web at http://www.odu.edu/al/art/gallery.
