LADY MONARCH GOLF TEAM TEES UP INAUGURAL SEASON
Old Dominion University Head Women's Golf coach Pat Kotten announced the signing of four standout recruits for the inaugural season for the women's golf program.
They include Jennifer Noble of Virginia Beach, Ashley Davis and Erica Bryk, both of Ontario, Canada, and Reinie Vugrinec of Lewes, Dela. The Lady Monarchs open the season on Sept. 5 at the Baytree Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Noble comes to ODU from Queens University in Charlotte, N.C. She won the Payton Memorial, and qualified for the championship flight of the 2003 Virginia Women's Amateur. She reached the semifinals of the consolation match. She was also selected the most improved player at Princess Anne High School as a senior.
Davis was the U.S. National Minority Collegiate Champion (Independent Division) while at Tennessee State last year. She ranked in the top twenty in Ontario and qualified for the Canadian Women's Championships. She was also a member of the Ontario Apine Ski Team. A graduate of the National Ski Academy, Davis plans to major in journalism at Old Dominion.
Bryk comes to ODU from Atikokan High School where she competed in the Manitoba Junior Championships for the last five years, and finished in the top four in each of the last four. Bryk also qualified for the Manitoba Junior Team the last four years and went to the Canadian Nationals the last four years, with her best individual finish of 35th out of 96 girls. She was also Club champion in 2001 and 2002. Her lowest scored was 75th at the 2003 Manitoba Amateur Championships. She plans to major in health and physical education.
Vugrinec was a four-year letterwinner on the Cape Henlopen High School squad. She took second in the Salisbury Rotary Club Girls Championships in 2001. In 2002, she won two tournaments and placed second overall. In 2003 she placed first overall with three tour wins in the Senior girls Division. She comes to ODU from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where the program was discontinued just prior to her freshman year.
"I am excited about this first class of Monarch Women's golf," said Kotten. "All four of these women bring enthusiasm, commitment and drive to our new program. Jennifer Noble has a solid game for someone so new to the game. She makes a lot of birdies in a round and can shoot under par. Ashley Davis has recently come to golf from the world of alpine skiing. Quickly taking to the game that her father (he won the Ontario Amateur Championship in 1979) has excelled at. Ashley is a gifted athlete, she is long off the tee and is beginning to apply some course management skills. When she finally puts it all together with a short game, look out. Erica Bryk has a fundamentally sound game that should grow stronger in the better climate here at Old Dominion, and the Hampton Roads area. Reinie Vugrinec's game is consistency. She has been away from competition for a while, but once she has the experience of the fall season, I think that she will become a solid performer."
