CLARE M. SILVA, FORMER ACADEMIC SKILLS CENTER DIRECTOR
Clare M. Silva, former director of the Academic Skills Center at Old Dominion University, died July 3. Private services were held this weekend. A memorial service will be announced later this month.
Silva came to ODU in 1978 to be the first director of the Writing Center. From 1984-1987 she served as the associate dean for the School of General Studies. In 1987 Silva was appointed as the director of the Academic Skills Center in Student Services and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1997.
She will be remembered for her concern about the welfare of students and always stressed to her staff that "Students come first." Her accomplishments include receiving recognition and awards for her work at the university and in the community.
Silva is survived by four daughters, two sons, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister and one brother.
