ODU PHYSICISTS TO LEAD AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY TOPICAL GROUP
For the first time in the history of the American Physical Society Topical Group on Few-Body Systems and Multiparticle Dynamics, two people from the same institution will hold consecutive leadership terms. Rocco Schiavilla, an Old Dominion University physics professor, and previously vice chair of the organization, will serve as chair for the 2003-04 term. Colm Whelan chair of the ODU physics department, will serve as vice chair for the same term and chair for the 2004-05 term.
The topical group is an umbrella organization of atomic, molecular, nuclear, particle, and mathematical physicists, as well as quantum chemists, who are interested in the exact description of the dynamics of systems containing a small number of interacting particles.
Schiavilla is currently interim head of the Theory Group at the Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News. Both Schiavilla and Whelan are Fellows of the American Physical Society.
