MONARCH GOLFER NOMINATED FOR AWARD

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced today that Old Dominion University senior golfer Geoffrey Harris of Reading, England, is one of five finalists for the prestigous Byron Nelson Award presented by Cleveland Golf.

Candidates for the Nelson must be a graduating senior and the selection committee will consider equally a nominee's entire collegiate academic career, entire collegiate golf career and his character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration will be given to a nominee's good citizenship, as portrayed by Nelson over the course of his life and golf career.

Harris helped lead the Monarchs to the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association golf championship, the school's first ever. Harris, a 2002 Academic All-American and the 2003 Old Dominion University Male Scholar Athlete of the Year completed the regular season with a 71.55 scoring average, the lowest in ODU history.

He ranks 26th nationally in scoring and is 51st nationally, and second in the district in the Sagarin power ratings. He also competed in the Palmer Cup last summer for Great Britain against US collegians, and the World University Championships in Taiwan.

Harris won two tournaments this year, placed fourth or better in six tournaments, and tenth or better in ten of the 12 this season. ODU will compete in the NCAA Regionals, May 15-17. The recipient of the 2003 Nelson Award will be named at the GCAA Division I National Awards Banquet on the evening of May 30.
