HACE AWARDS STAFF MEMBERS AT ANNUAL LUNCHEON

The Hourly and Classified Employees Association (HACE) presented staff member and rookie staff member of the year awards to Mary Hayward, lab and research support supervisor for the biological sciences support facility, and Bob Evans, instructional support manager in the physics department, at HACE's 27th annual luncheon Wednesday.

Hayward was recognized as the staff member of the year for being an active member of HACE, a dedicated employee who often comes in early and stays late, and a master gardener volunteer for the city of Norfolk. The staff member of the year award is open to any classified or hourly employee with more then two years of service at Old Dominion.

In one of the many letters supporting Hayward's nomination, a colleague said, "Who do the biology profs call for building maintenance problems? Equipment problems? Who maintains the biology vehicular fleet? The all-knowing one: Mary. Who is Lytton Musselman's right hand knowledge queen? Who keeps a Siamese fighting fish on her desk to remind her of her strength when times are rough?"

As winner of the staff member of the year award, Hayward was given $200 from the Jill Nolte Endowment Fund, a one-year reserved parking space, a Norfolk Admirals prize package and a pass to a Ted Constant Convocation Center event among other items.

Evans won the rookie staff member of the year award, which is open to any classified or hourly employee with at least six months, but no more than two years of service at Old Dominion University. Evans was recognized as a dedicated and passionate worker and for his ability to communicate well with students. In a letter of recommendation, a colleague noted that "It's hard to imagine anyone more team oriented than Bob Evans. A catch phrase that has rapidly caught on when someone needs anything done is 'Ask Bob,' which they do often to find he has already solved the particular problem at hand.

As rookie staff member of the year, he was given $100 from the Jill Nolte Endowment Fund, a Norfolk Admirals prize package, a pass to a Ted Constant Convocation Center event and five free Chick-Fil-A meal tickets, among other items.
