NATIONAL ALCOHOL SCREENING DAY IS APRIL 10 AT ODU

National Alcohol Screening Day will be held at Old Dominion University from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, to offer students, faculty, staff and the community an opportunity to learn more about how alcohol can affect their health.

"The focus of National Alcohol Screening Day is to give students and other participants the facts they need to draw the line for themselves," said Mark Blagen, health education coordinator in Student Health Services. "Most ODU students drink infrequently and responsibly (65 percent) or abstain (18percent). But, unfortunately, too many students do not realize the potential costs of risky drinking, that even modest intake of alcohol dramatically increases risk, the signs of alcohol poisoning, or how even a moderate amount of alcohol can interact with common medications and affect academic or athletic performance."

Brief self-assessments on drinking habits and behavior, as well as written self-tests, will be conducted in the South Mall of Webb Center. Participants can also hear an educational presentation on how alcohol can affect health and the dangers of risky drinking. Health professionals will be available for one-on-one consultations. For more information contact Blagen at 683-5117 or mblagen@odu.edu.
