LINES OF LITERACY' SEMINARS ARE APRIL 15-16
Old Dominion University's Department of English and its Writers in Community program are sponsoring a series of literacy-related seminars titled "The Lines of Literacy: Connecting Minds and Hearts Through Writing and Reading" April 15-16.
The Writers in Community program works to encourage creativity and self-expression by raising awareness of the critical nature of literacy skills. The program sends volunteer MFA students in the creative writing program into Hampton Roads communities to share their skills by connecting minds and hearts through writing and reading.
WIC reaches out to all ages to create awareness of the importance of reading and its critical link to self-expression. The Lines of Literacy extends the direction set by the 25th Annual Old Dominion University Literary Festival with two days of readings, panel discussions and storytellers for children and adults.

Tuesday, April 15
1:30-3 p.m. "Where the Eye Looks, the Heart Sees: A Panel," room 104, Batten Arts and Letters Building � Identifying strategies and techniques which can excite the imagination and stimulate an exchange of stories. Moderator: Abha Gupta, director, Old Dominion Reading Center; also, Judith Eure, coordinator of Adult and Alternative Programs for Portsmouth City Public Schools; Jacquelyn Harris, supervisor for adult education and literacy programs, Chesapeake City Schools; and Margaret Kiernan, Adult Academic Programs, Virginia Beach Adult Learning Center.
8-9:30 p.m. "The Inspired Spirit: Survival Stories" � Readings by Joe Jackson, author of "A Furnace Afloat: The Wreck of the Hornet and the 4,300-Mile Voyage of Her Survivors," and Lauren Winner, author of "Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Spiritual Life," room 100, Kaufman Hall.
Wednesday, April 16
10-11:30 a.m. "Weaving the Story: Storytelling for Children" � Camille Yarbrough, author of "Cornrows and The Shimmershine Queens," Chandler Recital Hall, Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
2-3:30 p.m. "Tall Tales: From Cyclops to Buck-Dog" � Stories by Lynn Ruehlman and Bill Lepp, author of "Buck Meets the Monster Stick," room 100, Kaufman Hall.
8-9 p.m. "Finding Our Way Through Story" � Storyteller Rex Ellis, room 100, Kaufman Hall.
