FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL CONCLUDES FRIDAY
The 2003 Old Dominion University Film and Video Festival, titled "Soundtracks: Music in Film and Television," concludes Friday, April 4. All events are free and open to the public and will take place on the Old Dominion campus in room 102 of the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building unless noted.
Today's events include:
April 4-------------
9 a.m.
"The Mission" (1986), with introductory remarks by Martha Daas, instructor of Spanish, Old Dominion University. Featuring a majestic score by Ennio Morricone, this film depicts two European forces that win the South American natives over to imperialist ways. The plunderers want to extract riches and slaves from the New World. The missionaries, on the other hand, want to convert the Indians to Christianity and win over their souls. Running time - 125 minutes.
Noon
"American Graffiti" (1973), with introductory remarks by Carla Harrell, lecturer of communication and theatre arts, Old Dominion University. It's the last night of summer 1962, and the teenagers of Modesto, Calif., want to have some fun before adult responsibilities close in. Running time - 110 minutes.
3 p.m.
"Student films: Works in Progress," a presentation and discussion led by Konrad Winters, associate professor of theatre and director of the film and video studies minor at Old Dominion University. This session will include a selection of short films on a variety of subjects by Old Dominion University students who are currently working in video production.
6 p.m.
"The Piano Teacher" (2002), with introductory remarks by Heidi Schlipphacke, assistant professor of German, Old Dominion University. (This event is also part of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures' sixth annual symposium titled, "Music and Literature: The Universal in Foreign Languages.") This is the story of Erika, a piano teacher at a prestigious music school in Vienna, who still lives with her overprotective and controlling mother. Lonely and alienated, Erika finds solace by visiting sex shops and experimenting with masochism. In French, with English subtitles. Running time - 130 minutes.
11:30 p.m.
"Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975). (Location: Naro Movie Theater, Colley Avenue, Norfolk; admission: $6.50). This low-budget freak show/cult classic/cultural institution, features a timeless rock-'n'-roll soundtrack that defies comparison. Running time - 100 minutes.
