PULITZER-WINNING AUTHOR TO DELIVER PRESIDENT'S LECTURE MARCH 20

Pulitzer Prize-winning author James McPherson will deliver the Old Dominion University President's Lecture in History at 8 p.m. March 20 in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building auditorium.

The author of more than a dozen books on the Civil War era, McPherson will discuss "When Will This Cruel War Be Over: The Problem of Peace in the Midst of War."

McPherson has taught since 1962 at Princeton University, where he holds the chair of George Henry Davis '86 Professor of American History. He is president of the American Historical Association and was the 2000 Jefferson Lecturer in the Humanities, the highest recognition given by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

McPherson's books include the Pulitzer-winning "Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era" (1989), and he won the Lincoln Prize in 1998 for "For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War." His most recent book is "Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam" (2002).
