ODU'S MAGLEV PROJECT FEATURED ON HISTORY CHANNEL TONIGHT

Old Dominion University's Maglev demonstration project will be shown in "Modern Marvels: Bullet Trains" at 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 on The History Channel.

The show focuses on bullet trains in Europe, Japan and in the United States and how the propulsion of high-speed trains is rooted in fundamentals that haven't changed since the first electric trolleys appeared in the 19th century. The show will also examine how scientists are looking at new alternatives to electricity, including magnetic levitation that can move passenger trains 345 miles per hour and beyond.

Old Dominion's maglev, the first in the United States, is a unique partnership between the university, American Maglev Technology, Lockheed Martin and federal and state government. When it opens later this year, the vehicle will shuttle students and staff from Powhatan Avenue, across campus to the Ted Constant Convocation Center and will be a national center for continuing maglev research.

The History Channel can be seen locally on Cox Cable channel 59. The program will be aired again at 2 a.m. Tuesday, March 12.
