NEXT ECON. CLUB SPEAKER IS APRIL 22

Werner DeBondt, Richard H. Drehaus chair in behavioral finance at DePaul University in Chicago, will speak at the next Economics Club of Hampton Roads luncheon. The talk will be held at noon Tuesday, April 22, at the Sheraton Waterside in Norfolk.

Co-sponsored by Old Dominion University's College of Business and Public Administration, the luncheon is $30 for nonmembers. Due to limited space, reservations are required two days prior to the event.

Many experts agree that the starting point for the field of behavioral finance was in 1985 with DeBondt's paper "Does the Stock Market Overreact?" published in the Journal of Finance, which he co-wrote with Richard Thaler. Behavioral finance researchers seek to bridge the gap between classical economics and psychology to explain how and why people and markets do what they do. DeBondt conducts seminars for academics and investment professionals in Europe, Asia and the United States.

His areas of expertise also include experimental economics, financial economics, investment management, opinion survey design, persuasion, security analysis, and stock valuation and trading. He has taught at several international universities in Belgium, Holland and Switzerland, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Cornell University, where he received his doctorate.
