MOVIE/TV MUSIC IS TOPIC OF 2003 OLD DOMINION FILM AND VIDEO FEST

The 2003 Old Dominion University Film and Video Festival, titled "Soundtracks: Music in Film and Television," will be held March 30-April 4. All events are free and open to the public and will take place on the Old Dominion campus in room 102 of the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building unless noted.

Keynote events include a presentation by B.J. Leiderman, award-winning National Public Radio composer and a Virginia Beach resident, who will discuss his life as a self-described "theme-music junkie" at noon Wednesday, April 2, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

WHRV radio personality and local jazz musician Jae Sinnett will discuss "Jazz in Film" at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1. Also on April 1, a 6:30 p.m. performance by local band "Fat Tony" will precede a screening of the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" at 7:15 p.m.

The festival's first public event is "Major Jewish Film Composers from the Golden Age of Hollywood," an examination of the role of music in film, with attention given to some of the different techniques used by composers that result in particular emotional responses in viewers, presented by Katherine Preston, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music at The College of William and Mary at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30.
